Bellary, Sep 11: Continuing its raids in the illegal mining scam, CBI today conducted searches at the residences of four close aides of mining baron G Janardhana Reddy and seized several documents, official sources said.

The central agency raided the residences of Reddy's aides and also Pragati Grameen Bank in Renukacharyanagar, Nehru Colony and Gandhinagar areas.

A six-member CBI team from Hyderabad swooped down on the residence of Gurulinge Gowda, Chairman of Bellary Urban Development Authority, at Renukacharya this morning, while six others conducted searches at the residence of Rajashekar Gowda, a zilla panchayat member and resident of Nehru Colony.

Eight CBI officials also raided the houses of Bhaskar Reddy and Venkatesh Reddy at Gandhinagar, sources said.

The probe agency later brought Bhaskar and Venkatesh Reddy to Pragati Grameen Bank in Gandhinagar and scrutinised their bank and locker accounts for nearly 45 minutes, they said.

The sources said CBI might continue raids tomorrow as their plan to raid some more associates of Reddy did not fructify today. Some associates of Reddy have left the city, fearing CBI raids, they said.

Reddy, the mining baron and former state minister, is currently lodged in a Hyderabad jail following CBI raids on his residence here on September 5 in connection with illegal mining.

Another high profile arrest was of Marria Monika Susayraj and boyfriend Lt M L Jerome Mathew in Mumbai for allegedy killing Neeraj Amarnath Grover, creative ad agency head in May 2008, a murder suspected to be result of a 'love triangle'.

Ex-CVC oppose Anna Hazare's formula, advocates 2T mantra

B D Narayankar

Press Trust of India

Bangalore, Sep 9: Opposing anti-graft crusader Anna Hazare's demand for Lokpal to curb corruption, former Central Vigilance Commissioner N Vittal today said such a gargantuan authority cannot function as there were chances of bureaucracy creeping into the system.

"We don't need a gargantuan institution like the Lokpal which is the base of Anna Hazare's agitation ... Ultimately who will ensure all officials under Lokpal are not corrupt? After all, they have come from the same system," Vittal told PTI on the sidelines of the annual vigilance awaress talk organised by HAL in Bangalore.

Stressing on the idea of ensuring right people occupying right posts, he suggested to follow 2T principle - Tranparency in selecting right people and There Is No Alternative (TINA) criteria which would impel selection of right people.

Vittal, however, gave credit to Anna Hazare's agitation which provided an opportunity to the middle class and the poor to vent their anger at corruption and lack of good governance.

He said corruption, if not addressed in time, could lead to the destruction of institution and erosion of credibility of establishments.

Vittal said a poor perception of integrity level in the country does not encourage a potential foreign investor.

The reason for prevalence of corruption in India was due to politicians weilding maximum power and influence, he said.

B D Narayankar

Press Trust of India

Bangalore, Sep 9: Popular Kannada actor Darshan was today arrested for allegedly assaulting and threatening his wife with revolver and has been booked for various offences including attempt to murder, police said.

The actor was taken into custody based on a complaint filed by his wife, Vijayalaxmi who is undergoing treatment for injuries in the Intensive Care Unit at a hospital.

“Cases under different IPC sections including 307 (attempt to murder) and Arms act have been registered against the actor,” said police.

In her complaint, Vijayalaxmi alleged that the actor has been torturing her and their three-year-old child.

Police said Vijayalaxmi along with her child had gone to her friend's house last evening after a fight with Darshan.

“The actor later went there and was returning home with his wife and child in his car when he allegedly assaulted her in an inebriated condition,” said police.

Darshan, son of erstwhile Kannada film villain, Toogdeepa Srinivas, has a huge fan following. He has acted in numerous blockbusters and has three big budget movies featuring him scheduled for release.

The actor married Vijayalaxmi seven years ago after a love affair.

Delhi blast has not impacted IT industry: Infosys

B D Narayankar

Press Trust of India

Bangalore, Sep 8: Infosys Executive Co-Chairman S Gopalakrishnan today said the Delhi bomb blast has not raised concerns about its impact on the IT industry.

He added, however, that Infosys was implementing a disaster recovery plan.

"There were concerns in the aftermath of Mumbai terror attacks, but we have not seen any concerns raised following the Delhi blast. Firms are confident that their customers will not be impacted," Gopalakrishnan said on the sidelines of the 7th India Innovation Summit 2011 here.

The death toll in yesterday's terror attack, when a high intensity bomb kept in a briefcase ripped through the crowded reception area at the Delhi High Court, rose to 12 today. The blast injured 75 people.

Gopalakrishnan said that overall, every country is concerned about terrorism and security issues.

He said Infosys was implementing a disaster recovery plan with the help of Central Industrial Security Force. "We are vigilant and we are trying to provide as much security as possible," he added.

Haven't seen clients reduce IT budgets: Infosys

B D Narayankar

Press Trust of India

Bangalore Sep 8: Infosys executive co-chairman, S GopalakrishnanInfosys Executive Co-Chairman S Gopalakrishnan today said the company has not seen clients reduce their IT budgets due to the slowdown in the US and Europe this year.

"If there was a cut back it would probably get reflected in next year's budget... All companies are doing well financially... Their cash positions are strong... Balance sheets are strong. They are prepared to face the slowdown period," Gopalakrishnan said on the sidelines of 7th India Innovation Summit 2011 here.

There has been a resurgence of investor fears that the US and European markets, which constitute about 85% of revenues of Indian IT services exporters, are headed for a slow down and hit the sector.

Gopalakrishnan said, however, that pricing environment was stable for now, as the focus on containing costs has been there since 2008 as the companies realise the perils of global slowdown.

"The concerted action of the governments around the world to invest significantly to get the economy going probably gave some optimism, but it was shortlived," Gopalakrishnan said.

On the IT spend by clients in the coming months, he said it would depend on what happens in the next three months, which is difficult to predict. "Since IT service is a support industry to other sectors, the impact will be felt after the other sectors feel it," he added.

Meanwhile Infosys CEO SD Shibulal said in a statement, "We're not seeing any immediate effect from the slowdown in the US and Europe. Clients are paying close attention to the developments in those regions but they aren't cancelling any projects right now."

On recruitments, Gopalakrishnan said the company was aggressively hiring people.

On variable pay, he said, "Right now, we are not looking into reducing variable pay component because companies have grown last quarter.

"We have to wait for an event to unfold and wait for the next quarter results ... I don't have an update in the middle of the quarter."
